"Vaathi" is a Tamil action-comedy film that delivers exactly what it promises - high-octane entertainment with a generous dose of humor. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and starring Vijay and Malavika Mohanan in the lead roles, the film is a treat for fans of masala cinema.
The plot revolves around a young, street-smart guy named Bhavani (Vijay) who runs a gang that deals in illegal activities. On the other hand, we have a tough, honest cop named Ram (Vijay again) who is determined to bring Bhavani and his gang to justice. The story takes a twist when Bhavani and Ram cross paths and engage in a cat-and-mouse game that leads to an explosive climax.
The film's biggest strength is undoubtedly Vijay's performance - he effortlessly slips into both the roles of the charismatic villain and the heroic cop. His energy and charisma keep the film engaging even during the slower moments. Malavika Mohanan, although given limited screen time, manages to make an impression with her performance as a journalist.
The action scenes in "Vaathi" are brilliantly choreographed and executed, and are sure to thrill action buffs. The film's music, composed by Anirudh Ravichander, is another highlight - the foot-tapping "Vaathi Raid" song in particular is a crowd-pleaser.
However, the film's biggest weakness is its predictability. The plot is familiar and doesn't offer many surprises, and the supporting characters are mostly one-dimensional. The film also suffers from pacing issues in the second half, with some scenes dragging on for too long.

PLOT -
Abhi, a student at the Srinivas Thirupathi/Srinivas Tripathi-operated Thirupathi (Tamil)/Tripathi (Telugu) Educational Institutions, discovers a box full of cassette records while cleaning his grandfather's video store with his pals. When Abhi and his buddies play the tape to inspect its contents, they discover a person instructing arithmetic in a really orderly and effective way. The friends think the maths he taught them was simple and check the box once again. They discover a receipt with the name A. M. Kumar (written in Tamil) or A. S. Murthy (written in Telugu) and the date 4 May 2000.
Moreover, they see the location listed as Sozhavaram (Tamil) / Siripuram (Telugu). The group decides to go there in order to track down A. S. Kumar/A. M. Kumar (Tamil). They eventually meet a peon from a government college who informs them that A. M. Kumar (Tamil) is not a lecturer but rather a former student who is currently the DC of Kadapa. As the group arrives in Kadapa, A. S. Murthy is questioned about the man in the video. He then provides them with information about Bala Gangadhar Tilak, also known as Balamurugan in Tamil (Telugu).
1993: During the period of economic privatisation, education became essential for people to advance, and professional programmes like engineering and Medicine had high demand. Many investors have turned education into a business after noticing this significant increase in schooling. They began accepting substantial sums of money from parents in the name of quality education to entice their kids into their private universities. At the same time, the government struggled to maintain its colleges and was unable to even pay the wages of the instructors. Even top-tier and seasoned government college instructors were engaged by the private colleges to teach in their institutions.
Lack of lecturers forced the closure of many government colleges. Education has grown out of reach for the poor who couldn't afford the private institutions. In order to support the current administration, Srinivas Thirupathi/Srinivas Tripathi, head of the private junior colleges organisation, devises a master plan to adopt all of the government junior colleges and send third grade junior professors to those colleges. Together with Karthik, a chemistry lecturer, and Prakash Reddy (in Tamil or Bulli Reddy (in Telugu), a physics lecturer, Bala/Balu is one of those lecturers who is assigned to teach mathematics in a government junior college. Any lecturer who excels in their specialty would be promoted to senior lecturer when Bala/Balu requests it, according to Thirupathi/Tripathi.
The three lecturers are transported the following day to Government Junior College, Siripuram (Tamil) or Government Junior College, Sozhavaram (Telugu). The village's president, Muthu Pandian (in Tamil) or Patthi Papa Rao (in Telugu), welcomes them enthusiastically. While there, Bala/Balu meets Meenakshi, a biology lecturer, and develops feelings for her. None of the pupils arrive at the college the following day. The Telugu lecturer Thanigachalam (Tamil) / Deekshitulu (Telugu) informs Bala/Balu that the college's enthusiastic welcome was all publicity and that no students actually attend.Meenakshi tells him that before the shut down of government colleges, this was the only government college in the district and many students from the neighboring districts used to arrive, but they were unable to trust them even after opening, thinking that they might close the government colleges sooner or later.
Meenakshi was promised by Bala/Balu that he will bring every student to class in three days. He requested that a gathering of all the villagers and their kids be set up by the president. Balu spoke on the value of education in order to make the parents and kids aware of its significance. Then, the pupils began showing up for the classes. Bala/Balu also welcomed back Muthu (Tamil) / Satti (Telugu), a former pupil who dropped out of school after his parents passed away and became an alcoholic and a smoker. He also changed the attitudes of a lot of disinterested students. Karthik falls unwell in the interim and departs from the college, along with Prakash Reddy/Bulli Reddy. With their departure, Bala/Balu takes over the responsibility of teaching both Physics and Chemistry classes as well, for both MPC and BiPC students.
Due to caste disparities, Bala/Balu observed that the students from MPC were mistreating the students from BIPC. By properly educating them, he removed this barrier from the classroom and from their brains. This act wowed Meenakshi, who developed feelings for him. All of the pupils successfully completed the board exams. With Bala/100% Balu's pass rate, Thirupathi/Tripathi approached him and informed him that the pass percentage of his own private institution is only 75% and that students wanted to enrol in government colleges because of the calibre of the education. He tried to lure him with a senior lecturer promotion and salary hike in one of his private college, but Bala/Balu did not fall for it and in-fact, stopped working for him. He even challenged Thirupathi/Tripathi that he will make all the students pass with distinction the next time and also get them a good rank in the TNPCEE/EAMCET examination.
Using this, Thirupathi/Tripathi paid off the head of the opposition party to organise a walkout against unemployment and the education minister of the ruling party to revoke the posts provided to professors at Government junior colleges and hire new ones instead. Balu/Bala lost his work as a result, and his father Narayanan (Tamil/Telugu) lost his job as a driver. However, Bala/Balu attended classes in a rural field. Thirupathi/Tripathi requested that Muthu Pandian/Patthi Papa Rao detain him and take him out of the community. Bala/Balu fights back, but the police catch him and imprison him.He received third-degree treatment from them. Soon after, he was returned to the village, where the locals were advised not to assist him in gathering his belongings as a sign that he belonged to a lower caste. Nonetheless, all the students came together and assisted Bala/Balu in securely boarding a bus to be transported back to the city with a heavy heart after observing that she could hardly walk and that too in the hot weather.
After numerous unsuccessful job interviews at the private junior colleges, Bala/Balu began tutoring at home after he had recovered. After deciding to marry him, Meenakshi arrived and made it plain that she just wanted to be with him. They noticed a little guy who wanted to study but couldn't because of poverty. He was under continual pressure to work and get money from his father. He was brought to Mohammed Ansari's house by Bala/Balu for free tuition. Bala/Balu was urged by Meenakshi to go back to the village and instruct the kids. Bala/Balu decided to record his lectures on cassette tapes before being exiled from the hamlet. He sent the cassettes to Bittu Bhupathi (Tamil) or Boothu Bhushanam (Telugu), a local video store owner. He asked Bhupathi/Bhushanam to run special shows for the intermediate students from 6:00PM to 9:00PM, everyday, where only Bala/Balu's lectures would be played. The whole village would think of it as another film.
In this way, Bala/Balu took classes for the students and also told them that, they have to pass with distinction, and also crack the TNPCEE/EAMCET examination. To clear the students questions and clarifications regarding the subjects, Balu constantly visited the village, under the guise of a drama artist, each Sunday. Thirupathi/Tripathi learnt about this and tried to order Muthu Pandian/Patthi Papa Rao to finish him off, to which he did not agree, stating that he was just using him. Muthu Pandian/Patthi Papa Rao knew about Bala/Balu's toil to teach the students and had a change of heart after seeing his daughter perform really well. He permitted all students of the village to go to junior college. On the day of the TNPCEE/EAMCET examination, while the students were on their way to the exam center, Thirupathi/Tripathi sent goons to stop them.
Bala/Balu fought them off and sent the students to write the exam. The students performed extremely well and cleared the TNPCEE/EAMCET examination in the top 46 ranks. Thirupathi/Tripathi offered money to all the 46 students, promising them sponsorship for their further studies and also a good life to their families, just for them to tell everyone that they have scored such good rankings, because of Thirupathi/Tripathi Educational Institutions and not because of Bala/Balu. Bala/Balu asked them to agree to it, because that is what he always wanted for them, everybody to respect them. He asked the students to use Thirupathi/Tripathi's ego, to climb the social-economical ladder to become successful and give back to those in the future, who would not be able to afford education. The students signed the contracts, but Bala/Balu and Meenakshi were never seen after that.
Present: A. M. Kumar/A. S. Murthy is revealed to be none other than Muthu/Satti. He tells the trio that the theater where they studied is now a EAMCET/IIT coaching center for the underpriviledged, developed by the 46 students, who take turns, and teach the students each year. When asked regarding the current whereabouts of Bala/Balu, A. S. Murthy replies that he does not know about his location, or even if he is alive. But he is sure that wherever Balu/Bala went after Sozhavaram/Siripuram, he would have made education accessible to everyone. Meanwhile in Ooty, it is shown that a still alive Bala/Balu and Meenakshi have opened a school, Ansari School of Knowledge, named after Mohammed Ansari, to provide free education for the underprivileged.
